Finishing

Finishing is going to be my Key Word for Fall and Winter!  I always have something I need to finish.  Always!  I am the kind of maker that always has loads of projects going at once.  I have always been this way.  I know alot of folks that start in on one project and they work steadily on it until it is finished before allowing themselves to start anything else.  That is amazing to me.  Incomprehensible really!  Sort of admirable as well.  But I just do not function that way.

Now, don't misunderstand.  I get alot done.  But I always have ideas running in my head, even when I am in the midst of making something else, visions of new bags, dresses, color combinations, just pop in to my head.  I often drop what I am doing, get out a sketch book and throw down some notes, sketches, ideas.  Or I just go and start in on that new thing, just to get it going.  I usually have got to get it out of my head or I can not move on.

I made a new prototype for a bag design last Spring.  It is so awesome.  I cut out a dozen the next week and well, they have been sitting ever since. :(

Summer Wrapup and Back to School

Hello There!

I wanted to share a little wrap up of our summer with you all.  It was full of fun and surprises and absolutely wonderful weather here all summer long in Michigan!

I already shared our 4H adventure.  And I shared alot of my teaching adventures as well. You can see more of my students projects on my facebook page.  I still have more images to add to the album, but there are lots to see now.

We took some great trips this summer, exploring Michigan.  My inlaws came over from Germany for a 2 and a half week visit.  We did some local things together and also ventured off to visit some other parts of Michigan. We had a great time at Muskegon Lake.

I mentioned before that my mother in law is a musician.  She played a little mini concert at a local church and my kids had a chance to play along with her.  Here is Lucas playing organ with her.

A shop of my own.......Sheree's Alchemy is finally a brick and mortar shop!

 
Yes!  You read that title correctly!!  I have opened the doors to my very own brick and mortar shop.  Words can not even describe the excitement and gratitude that I feel that I am lucky enough to get to make this long time dream come true!  I will tell the full story of how this all happened later, but I wanted to show you all some pictures of the place and extend an invitation to all of you that live in the Midland, Michigan area to stop by and visit!

Now for more quilting fun.

I managed to finish up the 2 quilts and 2 pillows that I started last week using the New Liberty Arts Fabrics. The piecing is very simple on all these items but the free motion quilting I did really takes them to a whole different level, I think.  I am so loving the one-of-a-kind, improvisational, just go for it feeling you get with pattern-free free motion quilting!  I have so many tops sitting around because I really dreaded the quilting.  No more!  I am so inspired and can't believe I did not try this sooner!!  I think this will be my summer to get all my quilt tops quilted and bound!!  Anyway, on to last weeks projects.

I call this one English Garden Strip Patchwork Quilt and it is available.

Since it is hot as all get out here in Texas, that means early morning and late evening, as during the middle of the day, it is just too hot.  I was out weeding yesterday at around 11:30 am and I think I sweated out about 4 liters of water...seriously!  Crazy enough, I just found out on Friday that I have a severe Vitamin D deficiency!  Can you imagine.  Those of you that get my newsletter will remember I mentioned that I fell ill after returning from out vacation in Sicily.  Well, after lots of test and exams, bloodwork revealed I Vitamin D deficient and slightly anemic and that this was why I was and still sort of am feeling slloooowwww and tired quite a bit!  So now with some supplements, I hope to get back up to my normal speed!

Anyway, I just had to share one image of the kids...while I was weeding, the kids were doing this:

Summer Break and Piano Recital

Well, school officially ended for the year on last thursday.  Both kids enjoyed a great school year.  They were blessed with amazing teachers and a great group of classmates!  I wanted to share a few images from the last day of school.

Those of you that have been reading my blog for a while will remember the art quilt I made for Leah's teacher last year.  Well I made a quilt for her 3rd grade teacher. 

Unfortunately, we were not able to get the artwork together to do one for Lucas' teacher.  He had such a great teacher and he misses her already.  He definitely developed a little crush on her.  Like his mama, I think he has a soft spot in his heart for teachers!

We wrapped up the school year on Sunday with the kids piano recital. 

 

This was Lucas' second recital.  His first was back in December 2009.  He had his first lesson in October 2009 and fell quickly in love with the piano!  For his recent recital, he worked on 2 recital songs for about 6 weeks and mastered them.  Then he made a big jump in his abilities, so his teacher decided to change his recital songs about 3 weeks ago.  I was stressing, big time.  But Lucas took on the challenge and did pretty well.  He was off to a great start and then the audience clapped, as they thought the piece was over.  The clapping definitely messed up his concentration, though.  He fumbles a bit on the second song..Bless his little heart!  That's what doing these recitals is all about though.  Learning how to stay focused in the midst of distraction is certainly something his momma has yet to master herself. :)

This was Leah's first piano recital. She took lessons for a year while we lived in Germany.  And then just started back up again in February.  She is progressing quite well.   She is not as in to the piano as her little brother....she prefers to sing and write songs.  She'll start up guitar lessons in a couple weeks.  But she'll have to keep doing the piano lessons as well.  It is just great fundamentals for her.

We are really proud of both of them!  Playing in front of a crowd (there were about 100 people there, including the students) is difficult even for adults.  All the kids did a great job!

After the recital, the kids requested to go to Cold Stone Creamery for a little ice cream treat.  They have both grown so much over the last year.  Leah (who's 9) is 4 feet 10 inches now and Lucas (who is 6 and a half) is about 4 feet 2 inches tall. I think they both grew atleast a half of a foot this school year!

Here is a family picture taken after the recital.  I am usually running away from the camera, but recognize that I need to stop or my kids will not have many pictures of me to look back on when I am old and gray!

As parents, hubby and I are tickled to see that the kids are taking on a keen interest in music.  Hubby and I actually used to have a band. Yes, we did!lol  I was the lead singer and he sang and played electric bass.  Our band was called the Blues Doctors because we were all Chemistry PhDs.  We played a few times in the Saratogo Springs, NY area where we used to live.  We even played at our old CSA Roxyberry Farm's annual family picnic.  And we played at our old company's Holiday parties.  We are thinking it is time to start a family band.  Now, wouldn't that be fun!

I should mention that if the kids end up showing real talent in music, the hubby and I really can't take too much credit for it.  My mother in law is actually the real musician in the family (you can download many of her recordings on itunes or find her work on amazon!  She spent a ton of time working with them when she was here for a visit back in March.

 

We wish we lived closer so they could have more frequent lessons with her.

My DSQ 8 Quilt is Fertig! (and some family pics)

Well, I finished up  my DSQ8 quilt and wanted to share some images.  Man, do I just love it!  I sure hope my secret swap partner does as well.  Here are some images.

This was so fun to design and work up.  I always love auditioning fabrics and seeing how things come together. I am not really a quilter (as you real quilters can tell by the pictures above), but I do love the process...the creativity involved in coming up with the original designs and color combinations.  The quilting part still stumps me...I am not all that creative yet...still swinging with the outline quilting like I did here.  I do love the effect and felt like it did not take away from, but instead really enhanced the applique design.  I want to spend more time experimenting and reading up on the topic of quilting so I can get better at it!

Here is the bundle of goodies I will be shipping off to my secret partner tomorrow.  After taking the pictures I realized I totally forgot to put on a quilt tag, so I need to get that on it and then ship this baby out.

I received my quilt from my secret partner..I love it and will share it next week in my next post!

Next up, I must share some pictures of the family.  My family and close friends have pointed out that I have not gotten caught up on family posts since my unexpected hiatus.  So I thought I'd better share some images from last weekend. 

The first spring bulbs are blooming.

We had our first outdoor lunch in months, as we had a pretty cold (for Texas standards), wet winter this year!  It is so nice to be able to spend loads of time outdoors again!

Hubby started a new Ice Hockey league last week, so on the weekend, he pulled out his gear to air it all out (hockey gear can be sooo gross!).  Leah had to try it all on, as she so enjoyed watching all the hockey games during the Olympics!

Of course, Lucas had to get in on the fun!

We've been trying to do some science experiments with the kids each weekend.  They are both totally in to science these days and you know with hubby and I both being chemists, we are all over this!  This past weekend, we made slime.

This weekend, we have the final basketball game of the season for Miss Leah.  And we hope to get some gardening done.  All this is waiting to be planted!

I'll wrap up this post with some pictures of my birthday girl!  She's 9 now!!!  She...melts....my....heart!!

Her party is not until the end of the month.  We had a small family celebration on her day and will celebrate a bit tonight with her basketball team.

Her first lesson on her new guitar.  She loves sneaking a tune in on hubbies vintage Fender..now she has her own (new, not vintage though).  She has been wanting to be able to play guitar while she sings, and now she can!

Climbing out of my hole..

Hello Friends and Family!

Well, as many of you noticed, I took an impromtu  blog/flickr break!  I know.  Where did that come from?  It all started innocently.  I kept thinking I'd get to posting next week, and the next thing I knew, 3 months had gone by!   I can't believe it has taken me so long to get back to this space.  I had so much on my plate after my first quilt market exhibition.  The plate is still full, actually, but I stepped back and got some things in order so that I could progress at a steady speed now.  I'll tell you all more about all that later. I just wanted to pop in and assure you all that I am okay. 

I also wanted to remind those of you that are local that the 3rd Saturday open Studio is this Saturday!  Please stop by if you are in the area.  I am in Studio #24 and will have fabric, some books as well as some handmade goods available for this one!

Each month will get better and better!  I promise!  We will start offering some workshops and have some fashion shows and other fun activities as we move through the year.  We also have a separate mailing list for this Third Saturday events so if you'd like to stay in the loop, please email me and I'll make sure you get added on the list!

October Review..Quilt Market, Quilt Festival and LAF Ride

Hello Friends,

Well, today, I would like to FINALLY do a bit of a recap of my October!  There was Quilt Market, Quilt Festival and the Lance Armstrong LiveStrong ride.  Pretty big things for me and it feels soooo great to have accomplished these goals and still have a smile on my face (and no bumps and bruises!).

Before I get lost in all of this, let me do mention here that the shopping cart on the fabric website is reopened and I added some new items to the site.  Remember, by the end of November/early December, the fabric shop will be closed.  Don't be sad..it will be replaced with something really fun! :)

Now, let's first recap the Bike Ride and then I'll move on to Quilt Market and Festival.

Well, I finished the Lance Armstrong LiveStrong bike ride in Austin, Texas...all in one piece!  It was a glorious day, a wonderfully organized event, full of great folks with great spirits!  I finished the 20 mile ride in 2hrs15mins and hubby completed the 90 mile ride in under 5hrs  (He is a stallion, I tell you!).  I took Betsy(my cruiser with the wicker basket from Germany) instead of Simone (my Trek road cycling bike).  I am so glad I did.  While Betsy struggled on the hills (she is so much heavier than Simone and just does not have the gear power), she kept me in control and comfortable and confident and that was what I needed.  There were some collisions, many slippery cattle crossings to contend with and some steep downhill decents on curves that I would have maybe succumbed to if I had been on the fast and sleek Simone.  Next ride, I'll give her a whirl.  But given this was my first ever attempt at any sort of ride like this, I am glad I used my better judgement and took the cautious path.  If you are still interested in donating to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, go to my webpage on the site.  Donations are accepted through the end of November.  Here are some images from the event.

Sunday, October 25th was the ride.  Hubby and I woke up at 4:30 am to get dressed and head out to Dripping Springs, Texas for the ride.  My sweet father-in-law flew over from Germany to watch the kids for us.  Poor guy also had to wake up at 4:30 that morning to come over to our hotel room to mind the kiddos.  Here are some pics of me and Hubby before the ride.

I stopped once at a refueling station...5 miles before the finish.  I really did not want to stop, but I also did not want to be that girl that collapsed just before the finish line either!  I was pretty proud of myself for completing the ride.  Honestly, I was sooo tired after Quilt Market and Festival that I almost backed out.  But quitting is not cool, so I pushed myself and am so glad I mustered up the strength to check this off the list and race some funds for a great cause along the way! 

Now, let's get to Quilt Market.  I already showed you all some pictures of my booth here.  But here are a few more.

 The new LOVE collection is just lovely and those of you that have been loving Amy's fabrics for a while will notice a few prints give a gently nod to some prints from her Temple Flowers collection!  I can't wait to get these in hand and start sewing with them...makes me want to redo my pattern covers!

Next up, the lovely Miss Heather... another Stunning booth...goodness!  I mean really, just gorgeous and so is the new fabric collection.  Another must have for moi!

Here is some Anna Maria Horner goodness and she and her assistant are both cute and kind as can be! 

 

And the fabric...swoony!!  Just delicious and rich and decadent.  All the cottons feel like silk.  Again, can not wait to get mine so I can sew some loveliness with it!

I also stopped by Jane Sassman's booth.  Jane's fabrics were some of the first "quilter's cottons" I ever used in making children's clothes back in the days when I used to sell on ebay.  Here is a picture of me with Jane in her booth

Oh My, this picture was taken on March 6, 2006!  Leah had just turned 5 a few days before and we had just learned we would be moving to Germany in June 2006!  Time flies, people!  Time flies! Sigh.... I was in a fab group on ebay called the HelloCollection and this was for a Launch we did called Celebrations.  I was "celebrating" Spring with this set!  It was a best seller!  This is one of my all time favorite sets that I've made and that launch was my favorite launch ever!  I regret selling the sample on this one...that's for sure!  But I do have more of this fabric...so maybe I'll make something again soon with it!

Okay, I diverged...got lost down memory lane there.  Back to Market....

I also got to spend some Q-time with some gals I met last year.  Mary, I did not spend too much time with this year, sadly.  But I got to spend alot of time with the fabulous Jonah of Mulachia Designs.  She took alot of pictures for me.  You can see her pictures here. She caught some pictures of Amy Butler and me when Amy by my booth.  I saw her walking by and dragging her in!lol  Jonah also snagged some pics of me with Paula Prass and Jen of Tula Pink.  Jen apparently has a reputation of being quite elusive, but I spotter her turning the corner outside my booth and again, dragged her in!lol

Traci and Myrinda also offered a ton of moral support and hung out in my booth so I could walk the floor a little bit!  Thanks girls...y'all really are the best! Here is a picture of Traci, Myrinda, Jonah and me in my booth. :) 

I also had the pleasure of meeting Kim from TrueUp ( I told you all that yesterday, I know), Jona from Fabritopia and, Linda from CraftApple...who else?

Oh, I can't forget the fabulous Brandon Mably was there! 

 Look at that chaise lounger....Cool, huh?  When Leah saw this picture, she screamed and asked me to buy it for her room.  I knew she'd love it!  His and Kaffe Fassett's fabrics always make me smile and I am looking forward to getting in some of their new prints to play with...they are as colorful and vibrant as ever!

Now for Festival...

My best friend Alison flew in from NYC to hang out with me for a couple days!  She and Leah hung out and shopped and brought me lunch and coffee and all the essentials! It was great to spend some time with her and to have some support at Festival, as I was really getting tired by then! :)

Me and My Girl!  Leah was so excited that she got to come to Festival.  Kids were not allowed into Market, so she did not get to visit there.  They came down for lunch one day, but were not able to come inside.  She did not think that was fair at all!  I was happy she got to spend time with me at Festival though!

 

 

 

 

Leah with Ellen, a fabulous doll maker I met at Market.  She had her own booth at Festival, which I did not get to visit, but Leah and my friend Alison stopped by and picked up a signed copy of her new book.  Ellen is so nice and turns out she also knows the fabulous Ms. Harmony, so we hit it off pretty quickly and I am looking forward to organizing a class around her new book...I think it would be a great class for my little sewing students! 

I also had the pleasure of meeting Malka at Festival.  I'm hoping we can connect again soon, since we live so close to one another.  Another wonderful person I met was Elaine from Interweave Press.  Turns out, she also knows the fabulous Ms. Harmony...so again, instant connection.  This crafting/creative world seems to just get smaller and smaller!

Okay, now I promised to show you all a sneak peek at some of the I picked up at Market and Festival, and will be sharing with you lovely readers starting next week!

Okay, I must go now.  My inlaws are here...I mentioned earlier that my FIL flew over from Germany to help with the kids while hubby and I did the bike ride.  Well he is still here and my MIL came over last week to join him.  They fly back to Germany in a few days, so we will be enjoying the lovely, cooler Texas weather (it is in the low 80s and sunny!) and I'll be back here next week for the giveaway series!  Then after the giveaways from Market and Festival, I'll do a proper reveal of each of my 9 new patterns!!! :)  Of course, they'll be a fun giveaway then as well! :)  Oh and I moved into my new studio space also!!  I can't wait to finish getting it set up and open its doors for local customers to shop and come take classes with me! :)  Of course, I'll share pics of that new space soon as well.

Easter Pics & Improvisational Quilt Tops

Hello!

I know, 2 posts in 2 days...how strange! :)  I am slowly getting back into a groove, and realized this morning I totally forgot to share some pics of the kids on Easter.  It was a super simple Easter this year...just the four of us.  I was supposed to head to sunrise service, but we stayed up too late the night before and I woke up just as the service was starting....bummer because I do enjoy sunrise service on Easter.  Anyway, for family and friends, a few pics of the kids searching for eggs in the garden.  They were a little nervous that the Easter bunny would think we were still in Germany, but I assured them that he'd find us.  And he did. 

They went straight out after waking up.  No breakfast or anything.  They wanted to go straight out in their pjs, but it was a little cool, so I asked them to atleast get some clothes on.  I think they dug in the dirty clothes hamper and pulled out the first thing they touched..so sorry about the not so schnazzed up pics.  This is just how it went down this year!

Hubby and I realized how sad it will be when they stop believing in all this (Easter bunnies, flying reindeer....).  Such innocence and sweetness, I tell you.  I do sometimes feel weird basically lying to them about all this...but I think it is these moments in childhood that are the most precious, and believing and having faith are two wonderful things, don't you think? 

Alright, enough mushy mom stuff.  On to some stitching...

I wanted to quickly share this little series of quilt tops I am working.  They just sort of happened, like most things I make do.  While unpacking the boxes I had stored in the quest room since we moved here, I found this fabric.  I can remember I bought this on ebay years ago in a lot of odd cuts from a manufacturer.  In the description, they did not note that these were odd cut pieces.   They just put the total yardage in the listing, so I was thinking I would get full yardage pieces to use for children's clothes.  Well, not...so these odd cuts sat in a box all this time.  Now that I am having a blast making quilts (well mostly quilt tops so far! I really need to get to quilting again!  The tops are mounting up!), I was excited to find these pieces and snuck in some sewing time between my orders to get some piecing in.  I kept finding so many fabrics to coordinate with this print (the good and bad side of having my fabrics organized by color!) that I ended up putting together a bunch of stacks and realized it was the perfect opportunity to do my first quilt series.  So here are the beginnings of the first two quilt tops. 

These were both just pieced as I went along...no planning.  They are super simple quilts, nothing new here.  But fun none the less!    I am not sure if they are done yet...I have not decided how large I want these quilts to be....or even if I want them all the same size, as I like the idea of offering them in varying sizes for different uses.  Right now they are great crib or lap size.  I do think making atleast one or two twin bed sized would be cute.  I can remember when I was nursing my kids at night, I'd  always grab a big cozy blanket that would cover my legs while we were in the rocker or an arm chair.  So a generous twin would be great for those cozy moments as well.  We'll see how the series develops...

So far, it will be a series of 6. Here are the other fabric stacks I put together.

I love how the look and feel of the quilt totally changes based on the complimentary fabrics used.

Since this little series came together in such a spontaneous way, I think it is perfect for my project improv project. 

Alrighty then, off I go.  The sewing machine is calling my name.  Actually Photoshop is calling even louder but I am going to ignore his voice and get to my girl...sewing is so much more fun! :)

I was tagged by Susan.  Here is what I have to do.

Part 1.  7 random facts/habits about me

1. My primary form of transportation right now is a bike.  Yup, that's right!  A bike.  Nope, it is not by choice.  I am in the midst of getting my German Driver's license.  Sounds like no big deal, right.  Right!  It will be a while.  It's a long story.  Basically, I come from a state in the US that does not have a reciprocal agreement with Germany as far as transfering driver's licenses goes.  I had 6 months to get the thing (our relocation company told me I had a year--they were wrong), soo now, I am not supposed to drive until I get the license.  Getting the license is a long and expensive process--many hours of driving lessons (since I have to learn how to drive manual shift to pass the test), studying many hours for the written exam (driving is very regulated here, millions of signs, different rules for right of ways, etc.)There's more, its a long story.  So my kids are I are biking it most places.  Lucas rides on the back of my bike in his "kindersitz".  Leah rides on her pink 2 wheeler.  We are having fun, I am getting back into shape.  So I am trying not to complain too much.  But when it rains.....that leads to #2
2. I have trouble following rules/directions.  Not that I don't understand.  I do.  I just like doing my own thing most times.  Not in an arrogant sort of way.  But I just find it boring to do what someone else has decided should be done.  I am sure many of you understand.  I used to say I was a rebel, but I am not really.  I just have my own way of doing.  Well, and sometimes, the "rules/directions" are just plain silly (like the driving thing--if I had come from Colorado, I could just get my license transfered !!!  It is silly and unfair, so when it rains or is cold (or I am running late!lol), this chicks driving!!).  I really find great pleasure in trying something different.  I am an experimentalist at heart, and that comes through in all aspects of my life, especially with rules/directions.  For example I buy cookbooks, but can never just follow the recipe, I always end up making something slightly different!lol  And each time I remake that dish, it is slightly different. 
3. I am a very fast typer!  Therefore I tend to type too much.When I type too much, I get embarrassed and feel like man, people are going to think I am a total yapper.  Which I am when I get relaxed and comfy and let my guard down.  Like I did up there.  But then I get all...embarrassed and I blubber.  Like now!giggle.  Okay, now I am being sillly.
4. I have trouble talking about myself.  I have written down things and erased them a million times.  Okay, for the last 3 points, I will just type.  No erasing.
5. I worry too much. 
6. I went to all girl school for high school AND college.
7. I have 2 patents.
